  • Creative ideas to express three key principles of Lexus: Anticipate. Innovate. Captivate.
  • Closing date for entries: 10 October 2021

TOKYO, Japan (July 13, 2021) – Entries are now open for the Lexus Design Award 2022, an international competition first launched in 2013 for up-and-coming designers from all over the world. As a global platform to identify and promote the best design talents from around the world, the Lexus Design Award is committed to nurturing and supporting the next generation of creators through world-class mentoring.

The 2022 edition marks the 10th year of the Lexus Design Award. Over the past nine editions, the Lexus Design Award has showcased 90 creative works, and celebrated the talents of 139 individuals and teams who have contributed to shaping a more sustainable, brighter and happier tomorrow for people and communities across the globe.

The winning designs from Lexus Design Award 2021 are testament to this.

A low-cost, innovative design by the 2021 Award winner, Henry Glogau will deliver clean drinking water from polluted and sea water to parched and impoverished environments through a portable solar distiller; and from among the finalists come design solutions like re-useable and re-arrangeable packaging with the versatility to be applied in different ways; a calming app that helps people with emotional stress; and an evaporative cooling system for subway stations made of inexpensive and accessible terracotta.

2,079 submissions were received in the 2021 Lexus Design Award, and of these, close to 700 submissions came from across the eight Lexus Asia markets. Indonesian designer, electrical and textile engineer, Irmandy Wicaksono took pride of place among the six top finalists of the 2021 Award.

His project, KnitX explored the boundaries between electronics, textiles and musical interfaces, and comprised a musical fabric that responds to tactile gestures and an interactive carpet that evokes the bi-directionality between dance and music.

The over-arching theme for Lexus Design Award 2022 will focus on Designs for a Better Tomorrow. Participants will be required to demonstrate how their creative ideas express the three key principles of Lexus: Anticipate, Innovate and Captivate.

Design submissions should anticipate the global challenges that present and future societies will face, and envisage engaging and innovative ways to contribute to a more sustainable future. Lexus is looking for ideas that captivate and build a happier, brighter future for people and communities in diverse circumstances.

What distinguishes the Lexus Design Award apart from other design competitions, is that the top six finalists will have the benefit of being coached and mentored by four of the world’s leading creators in the design field. Each of the six finalists will experience a priceless, once-in-a lifetime mentoring journey with these eminent personalities. This journey will include personalized guidance to help each finalist build and evolve their prototypes to their maximum potential.

Submissions are open for Lexus Design Award 2022, with the closing date on 10 October 2022. All entries will be reviewed by an elite panel of judges, with six finalists to be selected and announced by early 2022. Each finalist will be funded with a budget of more than USD25,000 to develop their prototype design. The finalists will present their final proposals to the judges in the spring of 2022, after which a Grand Prix winner will be selected.

The names of the Lexus Design Award 2022 judging committee and the mentors will be announced in the fall of this year.
